Before You Seal Your Terrarium

Think your terrarium is ready to close? Check these things first.

A closed terrarium may look simple, but once you put the lid on, you've created a tiny ecosystem. The plants, moisture, soil, light, and microorganisms all need to stay in balance.

Before sealing your terrarium, take a few minutes to check the basics.

1. Choose the Right Terrarium Plants

Not every houseplant belongs in a closed terrarium.

Choose plants that enjoy high humidity, indirect light, and consistently moist conditions. Healthy plants are also less likely to develop problems after the terrarium is sealed.

Before closing the lid, check for pests, damaged leaves, or signs of rot.

2. Get the Moisture Right

Your terrarium should be moist, not soaking wet.

Too much water can lead to mold, root problems, and an unhealthy environment. You want enough moisture to support the plants without turning the bottom of the terrarium into a puddle.

When it comes to water, less is often more.

3. Remove Dead Leaves

Always remove dead or damaged leaves before sealing your terrarium.

Inside a closed environment, decaying leaves can encourage mold and bacteria and add unnecessary organic material to the ecosystem.

A quick clean-up now can save you from a bigger problem later.

4. Don't Overcrowd Your Terrarium

More plants don't always mean a better terrarium.

Give your plants enough room to grow and leave some open space between them. Good spacing helps with airflow and keeps the terrarium from becoming overly humid or crowded.

Your terrarium doesn't need to be full to look beautiful.

5. Give It the Right Light

Place your closed terrarium in bright, indirect light.

Avoid direct sunlight. Glass can trap heat, causing the temperature inside to rise quickly and potentially damage your plants.

The right light helps your terrarium stay healthy without overheating.

6. Let Your Terrarium Find Its Balance

Once sealed, your terrarium needs time to settle.

Some condensation on the glass is normal as moisture moves through the ecosystem. However, if the glass stays heavily covered in water all the time, you may have too much moisture.

Don't rush to interfere. Observe first, then adjust if needed.

Ready to Seal?

Before putting the lid on, ask yourself:

✓ Are my plants healthy?
✓ Is the substrate moist but not soaked?
✓ Did I remove dead leaves?
✓ Is there enough space between the plants?
✓ Will it get bright, indirect light?

If everything looks right, it's time to close the lid and let your little ecosystem do its thing. 🌿

A healthy closed terrarium isn't about constant care. It's about creating the right conditions from the start.
