A healthy terrarium starts from the bottom up. Before adding soil, moss, and plants, there’s one important layer you shouldn’t skip: drainage.
What Is a Drainage Layer?
A drainage layer is the bottom layer of a terrarium, usually made of expanded clay pebbles or similar materials. It creates space for excess water to collect instead of leaving the plant roots sitting directly in wet soil.
In a closed terrarium, where water continuously circulates inside the glass, getting the moisture balance right is essential.
Why Is Drainage Important?
1. Helps Prevent Waterlogged Soil
Too much water can leave the substrate soggy for too long. A drainage layer provides a space for excess water to collect, helping keep the root zone from becoming overly wet.
2. Supports Healthy Roots
Plant roots need both water and oxygen. When the substrate stays saturated, oxygen becomes less available, increasing the risk of root damage and rot.
3. Helps Maintain Moisture Balance
A drainage layer gives excess water somewhere to go, making it easier to manage moisture in your terrarium. However, it doesn't remove excess water from the system, so adding too much water can still cause problems.
How Thick Should the Drainage Layer Be?
For most small terrariums, a layer of around 2–4 cm is a useful starting point, depending on the size and shape of your container. The goal is to create enough space for excess water without taking too much room away from your plants.
After adding the drainage layer, you can place a thin layer of activated charcoal if your setup calls for it, followed by your terrarium substrate.
Can You Skip the Drainage Layer?
For most closed terrariums, a drainage layer is a helpful part of the setup. Without one, excess water has less space to collect away from the roots.
But remember: a drainage layer isn't a solution for overwatering. If too much water builds up, the soil can still become saturated, even with drainage at the bottom.
Start with the right amount of water, use a suitable substrate, and keep an eye on condensation inside the glass.
Build a Healthier Terrarium from the Start
A beautiful terrarium isn't just about choosing the right plants or arranging moss and stones. It's about creating an environment where everything works together.
The drainage layer may be hidden at the bottom, but it plays an important role in supporting a balanced little ecosystem.
